MiniNodes has launched $259 pre-orders for a carrier board that supports up to 5x Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3 modules. The 5 Node Raspberry Pi 3 CoM Carrier Board provides a switched Gigabit Ethernet port to provide networking availability to each of the modules.

The company explains the Raspberry Pi 3 CoM Carrier Board can be used to provide edge compute capacity in remote environments, industrial settings, or space constrained locations. Alternatively, you could use it as a learning / teaching platform for subjects such as compute clustering, Docker Swarm, Kubernetes, or simply make use of the hardware as a general purpose development platform.

Potential use cases for the Carrier Board include extreme edge computing in remote locales such as villages and rural communities;  industrial internet of things enablement such as factory automation and monitoring of production and assembly lines;  commercial building automation, HVAC, and energy consumption analysis;  smart city data acquisition and image pre-processing captured in roads, intersections, and sidewalks;  airport, train station and tracks, shipping and ports, and other infrastructure terminals;  mining, forestry, environmental, and renewable energy installations such as solar, wind, or hydro;  and many more scenarios where machine learning and artificial intelligence at the edge, internet of things and IIoT are rapidly developing.

No detailed specs were available for the board which offers five slots that fit the RPi CM3’s edge connector.

The company is now taking pre-orders for $259 plus shipping with delivery scheduled for December or January.
